Pros

  • The Hall has a cool set of online tools for collaboration and sharing.
  • The interface is easy to use for new content creators.

Cons

  • Too old to run on contemporary computers.
  • Missing some modern features and file formats.

Storm Music Studio is a suite for creating music digitally through an ensemble of computerized instruments. The software is built to be as simple and as streamlined as possible, allowing users to create their own music without the formal training as an audio technician that such a project might otherwise require.

Storm Music Studio has an interface that accommodates on-the-fly composition using a drag-and-drop system for adding instruments to a mix. The most remarkable part of the software is the online component. Storm Music Studio is a community-driven piece of software. Tools for sharing creations, collaborating on projects, communicating with other users for tips and tricks, and other useful gadgets all exist in an area called the Hall, which houses all the online connectivity. The potential for a thriving online community providing help and tips to new users, as well as collaborating on advanced work, is a major draw for Storm Music Studio.

Despite the unique advantages of the Hall, Storm Music Studio is not viable software. The problem is that Storm is simply too old. It has not been compatible with Windows since the days of XP and Windows 98. That means that Windows Vista, 7, and 8 are all unsupported and incompatible with Storm. It is simply not workable for software to need an operating system that is more than seven years old to run. Although the appeal of the Hall is undeniable, other modern audio software suites have their own online communities that can provide just as much support as the Hall did. Unless the software will be rewritten for modern operating systems, it is not worth a download.
